A sign-off of the times
by Linda Grant

Linda Grant's last regular weekly column in The Guardian (and my last image) as she signs off to write a novel. Reacting to the news that 'Russia is on the brink of economic Armaggeddon and so might we be', the writer considers the imminent collapse of capitalism and ponders the political ideals she subscribed to through her life. 'Its terribly, terribly difficult to find anything much to attach ones idealism to today..' and recession ends the sense of possibility. In Jarvis Cocker's withering words, 'only tourists think that poor is cool'. The image represents a waving goodbye to prosperity, and a waving goodbye from me.
