Vote Blair
Guardian, 29 April 1997
One last kiss of life for democracy
by Linda Grant
It's two days before the
1997 general election and Grant shows her colours, explaining that 'maybe
things won't be as different as we would like under Labour, but without Labour
we don't even have hope'. A defeat for Labour would cause the disintegration
of an unelectable main opposition party and the strengthening of the Conservatives,
'not just drunk on their own power, but toxic with it'. Grant 'nails the lies'
there is no difference between the two main parties, and that voting doesn't
change anything. 'I believe that politics does and can change things.. Allowing
the Tories in for a fifth term will unleash a welter of unjust and oppressive
laws'.
