On the game - but not for a laugh
by Linda Grant

The discovery that some Cambridge undergraduates are selling their bodies for sex, prompts Grant to examine why. The reasons seems partly to do with a 'brothel chic' fad and partly a legacy of changes to funding in higher education. The writer derides the fad. Prostitution is a sad game for sad people. For the working class prostitute there is little way out from the drugs, pimps, exploitation, HIV and gonorrhea. It is not something cool. 'As for the Emmas and the Alistairs, nothing is sadder than a fad thats gone out of fashion'.
