Still beating us with clubs
by Linda Grant
In response to the
release of an 'unsatisfactory' Equal Opportunities Commission document
relating to single sex clubs (such as the MCC and Garrick), Grant calls
for an amendment to the Sex Descrimination Act. The original law had a
loophole for 'private members organisations' which effectively operate
an 'apartheid'. The writer unreservedly condemns the fact that many of
these men's clubs harbour the male elite, where deals are made, networks
reinforced and power consolidated. Whilst women are at a constant disadvantage
in life, membership of certain clubs in London are considered invaluable
to one's career. Men broker the power without realising it. Grant concludes
that they should be forced into compliance - 'there ought to be a law
against it' |
